Bunk beds are an excellent space saving idea

Maximize usable bedroom floor space with a bunk bed
Utilizing vertical space is the secret to bunk beds
design. There are literally thousands of styles and
designs to select from today, in all colors and levels of
quality. When selecting a bunk bed it is recommended
that you pay close attention to quality, durability, and
material selection. Solid wood frame bund beds are
generally the most durable and safest.

Safety factors to consider when selecting a bunk bed
Every year thousands of children are
injured in bunk beds, thankfully most of these are minor injuries and
can be prevented by selecting the right style and design of bunk
bed. Here is what to look for"
Adequate
guardrail spacing
All bunk beds have safety bars to prevent
falls, but what you need to watch out for is
the
spacing between the guardrail and the mattress, and between the
guardrail and the bed frame. In some designs the mattress can
move sufficiently to allow enough space for a child to slip through.
Make sure the gap between the bed frame and guardrail does not
exceed 3 1/2 inches. Make sure the guardrail also extends at
least 5 inches above the top of the mattress surface to prevent
children from rolling off in their sleep.
Double rails
Always select bunk beds with rails on
both sides. If you buy a bunk bed with only one rail and try
to use the wall as the other protective side, you run the risk of
your child's weight pushing the bed out from the wall and slipping
through the space between the wall and the frame.
Sturdy
construction
Many of the injuries each year associated
with bunk beds involve horseplay or roughhousing. When
selecting a loft bed design make sure the construction is solid, and
the guardrails and ladder are attached with bolts, screws or other
permanent fixtures.
Mattress size
To prevent the mattress from moving
around and creating a larger gap on any one side
between
it and the protective guardrails, make sure you buy the right
mattress size for the bunk bed. This might sound like common
sense, but often the pieces are sold separately and suppliers often
only stock the smallest size to ensure it fits in all bunk bed
openings.
Children on the lower bunk will often
place their feet on the underside of the top bunk and dislodge the
upper mattress when horsing around. It is important to teach
your children not to do this, and to secure additional cross straps
on the underside of the top mattress to prevent movement.
